Pros +

Pros +

  • The Asphalt Shingle (also known as Composition Shingle) is perhaps the most popular sloped roof of all time in the United States. It’s low cost, easy installation, and it’s ability to be walked on without breaking make it well loved.
  • The heavier versions of the shingle have good wind uplift ratings when they are first installed. Over time they become brittle, due to the sun’s UV exposure, and can blow off. They can, however, be preserved with a waterproof Roof Coating, such as Hawaiian SunGuard.

  • GAF is an old respected roofing Manufacturer.
  • Their products, like all the ones on this page are very reliable.
  • Their HD series is their top of the line.
  • Their Class A Fire rating is the highest available
  • I like that they are up to 53% thicker than many dimensional shingles.

  • This is Certainteed’s energy saving shingle
  • Usually will qualify for up to $500 in a Federal tax credit. Call Leakmaster for details.
  • The roof temps are reduced by 20% in the summer
  • By reducing “thermal shock” your roof should last longer.
  • ENERGY STAR rated
  • The Owens Corning Berkshire shingle is perhaps the best looking asphalt composition shingle out there.
  • It has a unique look which is instantly recognizable. We see it on the best homes in Manoa, Kahala, and Hawaii Kai.
  • It has a natural slate appearance.
  • Very upscale.

Cons -

Cons -

  • If you think The look is ordinary upgrade to the higher end Presidential or Grand Manor shingles.
  • Manufacturers don’t usually warranty homes for labor costs

  • All of these premium shingles weigh a lot so make sure your roof can take the weight without tearing the old one off.
  • If the price is too high for this top of the line shingle GAF makes a more affordable Timberline Natural Shadow series for less

  • You pay a bit more for the Cool Roof technology, if you live in shady Manoa or Kaneohe you may not need it.
  • CertainTeed makes more economical shingles if your needs are more modest.
  • Many people are choosing to coat their existing roofs with roof coatings, instead of tearing off and replacing with new.
  • A roof this beautiful looks best when it has a high slope: 6/12 and higher. A 4/12 will do but doesn’t quite have the same visual pop.
  • It is heavy and on the expensive side.
  • If you love the look that won’t matter– it will up your homes resale value.

LeakMaster’s Opinion

When I returned to Hawaii in 1976 after working construction in Australia the first “Dimensional” Shingle arrived on the market–Architect 80. I believe back then it was made by Bird and Sons, but I may be wrong. In any case, it was an instant success and has become the best selling shingle is Hawaii hands down. It’s name recognition is so strong in Hawaii that even after CertainTeed changed it’s name on the Mainland to Landmark Shingles Leakmaster likes GAF as well as all the others on this page. You really can’t go wrong. It usually comes down to which Manufacturer has your favorite color in stock–and that is generally CertainTeed as they have grabbed the lions share of Hawaii’s shingle market. Leakmaster has installed a few of these around Honolulu and they look and act like a regular shingle, only cooler. If you are a long term thinker, it is a good deal. Beauty is is eye of the beholder, and for our money, this is the best look out there. The performance is also well warranted so you can’t really lose.
